Efudex Cream (fluorouracil) is used to treat cancerous and pre-cancerous skin growths by killing fast-growing cells and blocking the growth of abnormal cells which can cause skin condition. Fluorouracil is prescribed to treat actinic or solar keratoses which can appear as scaly and crusted lesions caused by too much exposure to sunlight over a period of years.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Apply Efudex Cream to the affected areas of your skin.
  • Efudex Cream is typically applied twice a day. Try to use this medication at the same time each day.
  • When treating actinic or solar keratoses, fluorouracil should be used until your lesions begin to peel off. This is usually, after two to four weeks. Your lesions may not be completely healed until up to two months after stopping applying this medication.
  • When treating basal cell carcinoma, continue using Efudex Cream until all of your lesions have gone. This is typically between three and six weeks but could take up to twelve weeks.
  • The affected area and surrounding areas may feel irritated and look scaly, red and swollen during the first few weeks of treatment. This is a sign that the medication is working.
  • Do not apply this medication to your eyelids, eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Wait two hours after applying Efudex Cream before applying sunscreen or moisturizer to the affected areas. Do not use other skin products including cosmetics, creams, lotions or medications unless directed by a doctor.
