Santyl Ointment is a prescription medication that is used to help the healing of severe burns, skin ulcers, and dead skin tissue. Santyl Ointment contains collagenase which helps to break down the natural protein collagen in damaged skin tissue and create new, healthy tissue.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Rinse the affected skin area with saline solution or cleanser before applying this medication. Speak to your doctor about an appropriate cleanser to use. Some cleansers or antiseptic solutions may make Santyl less effective.
• Remove as much of the loose skin tissue as possible before applying Santyl Ointment. Gently rub the wound with a gauze pad soaked in the cleansing solution to remove this.
• Santyl Ointment should only be applied to the affected area of skin. Avoid getting this medication on the surrounding healthy skin.
• Santyl Ointment may be applied directly onto the affected area, or applied to a sterile gauze pad and then to the area.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding. It is not known if Santyl passes into breast-milk.

Common side effects of Santyl Ointment include but are not limited to:

• Redness at application site.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of collagenase:

• New or worsening illness.
• Signs of a new infection.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Santyl Ointment?

If you miss a dose of Santyl Ointment, you should use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
