What is Taclonex Ointment?

Taclonex Ointment is used to treat psoriasis. It helps to reduce the redness, thickening and scaling of the skin that occurs with this condition. Healthy skin lowers your risk for infection and protects you against the environment. This product contains two drugs. Betamethasone is a strong corticosteroid drug that decreases swelling, redness, and itching. Calcipotriene is a form of vitamin D and works by slowing down the growth of skin cells so that they don't build up into thickened, scaly skin patches.

Use Taclonex Ointment exactly as it was prescribed for you. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.

  • Topical medicine is for use only on the skin.
  • Wash your hands before and after using Taclonex unless you use this medicine to treat the skin on your hands.
  • Apply a thin layer of the medicine to the affected skin and rub it in gently. Only apply this medicine over a large skin area if your doctor has told you to.
  • Do not cover the treated skin area with a bandage or other covering unless your doctor tells you to. Covering treated areas can increase the amount of medicine absorbed through your skin and may cause harmful effects.
  • Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.

Before Taking Taclonex Ointment

Before using Taclonex Ointment, tell your doctor or pharmacist:
If you are allergic to it; or have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: a certain mineral imbalance or thin skin in the areas to be treated.

Suppose you have a skin infection or a skin reaction other than psoriasis (such as bacterial skin infection, chickenpox, or herpes simplex). In that case, it should be treated before you start this medication.

This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Tell your doctor immediately if you get sunburned or have skin blisters/redness. Your doctor may direct you to limit or avoid phototherapy while you use this product. Ask your doctor for details.

Rarely, using corticosteroid medications for a long time or over large areas of skin can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Before having surgery or emergency treatment, or if you get a serious illness/injury, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication or have used this medication within the past few months.

Though it is unlikely, this medication may temporarily slow down a child's growth if used for a long time. See the doctor regularly so your child's height can be checked.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
