Actos is a prescription medication that is used to control the blood sugar levels in people that have type 2 diabetes. Actos contains pioglitazone and works by restoring your body’s response to insulin and lowering your blood sugar. Pioglitazone is usually taken as part of a diabetes treatment plan that also includes diet and exercise.

• Your medical history particularly of heart failure, heart attack, heart disease, stroke, diabetic ketoacidosis, bladder cancer, diabetes, eye problems or liver disease.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Your dosage may need to be altered.
• If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

• Actos can cause or worsen congestive heart failure or increase the risk of women having broken bones.
• Actos should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes.
• This medication should not be used by anyone younger than 18.

Common side effects of Actos include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Cold symptoms including sore throat, sneezing, sinus pain or stuffy nose.
• Muscle pain.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of pioglitazone.

• Shortness of breath.
• Unusual tiredness.
• Swelling or rapid weight gain.
• Vision changes.
• Sudden unusual pain in your hands, arms or feet.
• Urination that is pink, red, painful, difficult or urgent.
• Signs of liver damage including dark urine, loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, nausea, clay-colored stools or itching.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Actos?

If you miss a dose of Actos, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the strength of Actos?

Both Actos and the generic alternative pioglitazone are available in strengths of 15mg, 30mg and 45mg.
