What is Acular?

Acular is a prescription medication that is used to treat itching, swelling, stinging, burning or pain in the eye. These symptoms may be a result of seasonal allergies, corneal refractive surgery or cataract surgery. Acular is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID) that contains ketorolac. Ketorolac works by reducing the hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Wash your hands and remove contact lenses before using the medication.
  • Tip your head backward slightly. Use your finger to pull down your lower eyelid. Hold the dropper directly above the eye and squeeze out a single drop.
  • Keep your eyes closed for 2-3 minutes. Use your finger to prevent liquid from draining into the eye duct.
  • If you have been directed to use more than one drop of Acular, wait at least five minutes between applying drops. Wait at least ten minutes before using any other eye medication.
  • Do not touch the tip of the eye dropper or let it touch any other surface.
  • Do not use Acular if the liquid has changed color if it has particles in it.
