Aldomet is a prescription medication that is used to treat high blood pressure. Aldomet contains methyldopa and works by decreasing the levels of natural chemicals in your blood which allows your blood vessels to relax. Aldomet may be prescribed to be taken alone or alongside other blood pressure medications.

• Aldomet can be taken with or without food.
• If your doses of methyldopa are not equal, take the larger dose before bedtime.
• Your blood pressure may need to be checked regularly while taking Aldomet.
• Continue taking methyldopa regularly, even when you feel well.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of cirrhosis, other liver diseases, kidney disease, heart disease, heart attack, angina or stroke.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

• Aldomet may affect the results of medical tests. Tell all of your doctors that you are taking this medication.

Common side effects of Aldomet include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Drowsiness.
• Weakness.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of methyldopa.

• Uncontrolled or involuntary muscle movements.
• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out.
• Confusion.
• Fever.
• Weakness.
• Jaundice.
• Dark-colored urine.
• Heart problem symptoms including shortness of breath, swelling or rapid weight gain.
• Signs of a liver or pancreas problems including nausea or vomiting, fast heart rate, loss of appetite, jaundice, upper stomach pain that can spread to your back or dark urine.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Aldomet?

If you miss a dose of Aldomet, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the strength of Aldomet?

Both Aldomet and the generic alternative methyldopa are available in strengths of 250mg.
