Alphagan P is an eye drop medication containing brimonidine which is prescribed to treat pressure inside the eyes caused by ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. Alphagan P is an alpha agonist that works by reducing the amount of fluid within the eye which then decreases the pressure inside the eye.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Wash your hands before applying this medication.
• Tip your head back and while looking upwards, use your finger to pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket.
• Squeeze out a drop and close your eyes for up to two minutes. Gently press down on the corner of your eye to stop the liquid from draining out from your eye duct.
• Repeat these steps for your other eye if necessary.
• If you use any other eye medications, wait at least five minutes before applying other medications. Use eye drops before eye ointments.
• Continue taking this medication even if you feel.
• Do not touch the tip of the dropper or allow it to touch any other surface to prevent contamination.
• Tell your doctor if your condition worsens.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of heart problems, circulation problems, coronary artery disease, low blood pressure, depression or Raynaud’s syndrome.
• If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

You should also know:

• Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of Alphagan P.
• Alphagan P may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blur your vision. Do not drive or do any other activity which requires alertness unless it can be done safely.

Common side effects of Alphagan P include but are not limited to:

• Mild itching, redness, burning or other eye irritation.
• Dry mouth.
• Blurred vision.
• Tiredness or drowsiness.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Alphagan P:

• Eye pain or increased watering.
• Vision changes.
• Severe swelling, burning, redness or discomfort or around your eye.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Alphagan P?

If you miss a dose of Alphagan P, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the difference between Alphagan P and Alphagan Z.

Alphagan P contains brimonidine and is available in 0.15% strength. Alphagan Z contains brimonidine tartrate and is available in 0.1% strength.
