Augmentin is used to treat bacterial infections including bronchitis, pneumonia, urinary tract, ear, and skin. It contains the antibiotic amoxicillin, and clavulanate potassium to help make the amoxicillin more effective.

Always follow your doctor’s instructions and use Augmentin exactly as prescribed.

• Take every 12 hours at the start of a meal.
• Use for the entire prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms improve.

Augmentin may make birth control pills less effective. Use secondary birth control (condoms, diaphragm) to prevent pregnancy.

Do not take Augmentin if you have:

• Kidney disease
• Liver problems due to amoxicillin
• Allergies to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics

Before taking Augmentin, inform your doctor if you have or have had any of the following:

• Liver or kidney disease
• Mononucleosis

Common side effects of Augmentin include:

• Nausea, diarrhea
• Vaginal discharge or itching

Contact your doctor if you experience these more serious side effects:

• Severe skin reaction – sore throat, swollen face or tongue, burning eyes, fever, skin pain, red or purple rash with blistering
• Producing little or no urine
• Severe abdominal pain, watery or bloody diarrhea
• Pale skin, dark urine, fever, confusion, weakness
• Bruising or bleeding
• Upper abdominal pain, loss of appetite, jaundice

Can I take Augmentin on an empty stomach?

It’s best to take Augmentin at the beginning of a meal, which reduces the likelihood of side effects like upset stomach.

My infection symptoms are gone. Can I stop taking Augmentin?

Finish the entire course of Augmentin as prescribed by your doctor. Discontinuing once you feel better increases the likelihood your infection will return.
