Axert is a prescription medication that is used to treat migraine headaches that have already started. Axert contains the drug almotriptan and works by reducing substances in your body that can trigger the symptoms of migraines. This medication should only be used to treat headaches that have been confirmed as migraines.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Axert should be taken at the first signs of a migraine.
• If your headache returns, take a second tablet two hours after taking the first. Do not take a second tablet if your migraine did not go away after the first tablet.
• Do not take more than two tablets within a 24 hour period.
• Speak to your doctor if you have more than 4 migraine headaches in one month.
• Do not take Axert within 24 hours before or after using another migraine medication.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of heart problems, heart rhythm disorder, angina, heart attack, stroke, mini-stroke, blood vessel disorders, liver disease, kidney disease, circulation problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, migraines or other headaches.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you have a family history of heart disease.
• If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

• Axert can affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can do so safely.

Common side effects of Axert include but are not limited to:

• Mild headaches.
• Nausea or vomiting.
• Dizziness.
• Drowsiness.
• Dry mouth.
• A numb, tingling, or burning sensation.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Axert:

• Pale or blue fingers or toes.
• Numbness or tingling.
• Signs of a high level of serotonin including fast heart rate, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, fainting, fever, hallucinations, agitation, or overactive reflexes.
• Signs of a stomach or intestinal problems such as severe stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, fever, diarrhea, constipation, or bloody or tarry stools.
• Signs of a heart attack including chest pain or pressure, nausea, lightheadedness, pain that spreads to your jaw or shoulder, or sweating.
• Signs of a blood circulation problem including hip pain, leg numbness or tingling, leg cramps, weakness or heavy feelings in the legs, or burning pain in the feet.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Axert?

Axert and the generic alternative almotriptan are available in strengths of 6.25mg and 12.5mg.

How many Axert tablets should I take?

Axert should be taken at the first signs of a migraine and a second tablet two hours later if the headache returns. Do not take more than two tablets within a 24 hour period.
