Bactroban Cream is a prescription medication that is used to treat skin infections including impetigo or a “staph” infection of the skin. Bactroban is an antibiotic medication that contains mupirocin. Mupirocin works by preventing bacteria from growing on your skin.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Wash your hands before and after applying Bactroban Cream.
• Wash and dry the affected skin area before applying the medication.
• Apply a small amount of cream with a cotton swab or gauze pad. This medication should not be used over large areas of skin.
• Do not apply Bactroban Cream by mouth.
• Rinse with water if this medication gets in your mouth, eyes or nose.
• Use Bactroban Cream for the full amount of time prescribed, even if your symptoms have improved.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition worsens or if it doesn’t improve after 5 days.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of kidney disease.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding. If this medication is applied to your breast or nipple, clean the area thoroughly before nursing.

You should also know:

• This medication should be used for the full length of time prescribed, even if your symptoms have improved.

Common side effects of Bactroban Cream include but are not limited to:

• Burning or stinging.
• Pain.
• Itching.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of mupirocin.

• Signs of a new skin infection.
• Severe stomach pain.
• Watery or bloody diarrhea. Do not use anti-diarrhea medication if this occurs.
• Unusual skin peeling or blistering.
• Severe irritation, itching or rash on the applied skin.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Bactroban Cream?

If you miss a dose of Bactroban Cream, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
