What is Biaxin?

Biaxin is a prescription medication that is used to treat several different types of bacterial infections as well as stomach ulcers caused by the bacteria helicobacter pylori. Biaxin contains the macrolide antibiotic clarithromycin and works by fighting bacteria in the body.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Biaxin can be taken with or without food.
  • Take Biaxin for the full amount of time prescribed, even when your symptoms improve.
  • This medication should not be shared with anyone else.

Cautions

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • About your drug and other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • Your medical history particularly of liver disease, kidney disease, heart problems, diabetes, myasthenia gravis, coronary artery disease, long QT syndrome, electrolyte imbalance or liver problems, or jaundice caused by similar antibiotics.
  • If you have a family history of long QT syndrome.
  • If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

  • This medication can harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control while taking this medication.
  • Biaxin should not be taken by anyone younger than six months.
  • Diarrhea may be a sign of a new infection. Do not take any anti-diarrhea medication without speaking to your doctor.
  • Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Biaxin.

Side Effects of Biaxin

Common side effects of Biaxin include but are not limited to:

  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Diarrhea.
  • An unpleasant or unusual taste in your mouth.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of clarithromycin:

  • Watery or bloody diarrhea.
  • Fast or pounding heartbeats or a fluttering in the chest,
  • Severe stomach pain.
  • Sudden shortness of breath.
  • Confusion, sudden dizziness, or a spinning sensation.
  • Signs of a kidney problem including shortness of breath, tiredness, little or no urination or swelling in the ankles or feet,
  • Signs of a liver problem, including dark urine, clay-colored stools, loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, or jaundice.
  • Signs of a severe skin reaction such as a red or purple skin rash that spreads, blisters and peels, sore throat, fever, or burning in the eyes.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.
