What is Biaxin XL?

Biaxin XL is a prescription medication that is used to treat bacterial infections that affect the skin and respiratory system. Biaxin XL contains the antibiotic clarithromycin and works by fighting bacteria within the body. Biaxin XL will only work to treat bacterial infections and will not treat viral infections.

  • Swallow this medication whole without crushing or chewing a tablet.

Cautions

  • If you or anyone in your family has long QT syndrome.

You should also know:

  • This medication should not be taken while pregnant. Use effective birth control while taking this medication. Clarithromycin can cause harm to an unborn baby.
  • This medication can cause side effects in a nursing infant if taken while breast feeding.

Side Effects of Biaxin XL

Common side effects of Biaxin XL include but are not limited to:

  • An unpleasant or unusual taste in your mouth.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Stomach pain or diarrhea.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of clarithromycin.

  • Watery or bloody diarrhea.
  • Severe stomach pain.
  • Confusion or a spinning sensation.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Sudden dizziness.
  • Fast or pounding heartbeat or a fluttering in your chest.
  • Signs of a kidney problem such as tiredness, shortness of breath, little or no urination or a swelling in your ankles or feet.
  • Signs of a liver problem including upper stomach pain, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, jaundice or clay-colored stools.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.
