Cafergot is a combination medication containing ergotamine and caffeine which is used to treat certain types of headaches including cluster and migraine headaches. Headache pain is sometimes caused by widened blood vessels in the head. Ergotamine works to narrow widened blood vessels while caffeine increases the absorption of ergotamine while also narrowing blood vessels.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Cafergot should be taken with or without food at the first sign of a headache. A typical dose is two tablets initially followed by another tablet every thirty minutes until the headache is relieved.
  • Do not take more than six tablets for one headache or ten tablets during a seven-day period.
  • Cafergot is most effective when it is taken at the first sign of a headache. It may not be as effective if taken once a headache has worsened.
  • Cafergot should only be taken as needed and is not meant for long-term daily use.
  • If you are taking migraine medication for more than ten days each month, your headaches may actually get worse due to medication overuse headache.
