What is Canasa?

Canasa (mesalamine) is a medication used to treat ulcerative proctitis by decreasing the amount of mucus and blood in your stools, your number of stools and the rectal bleeding that can be caused by irritation or swelling in your colon and rectum. Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory medication which blocks the production of natural chemicals that can cause pain and swelling. Canasa is a suppository medication taken rectally.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • This medication is usually taken once a day at bedtime.
  • If possible, have a bowel movement before using this medication.
  • Lie on your side and bring your topside knee to your chest. Using your finger, insert the suppository into your rectum, pointed end first. Use gentle pressure to insert the suppository completely and try to keep it in place for one to three hours, or longer if possible.
  • You may put a small amount of Vaseline or lubricant jelly onto the suppository tip if this makes it easier.
  • Try to handle Canasa as little as possible when using it to avoid it melting from the heat of your hands.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after using Canasa.
  • Continue taking this medication for your whole prescription even if you feel well.

FAQs

What else is Canasa called?

Canasa is also known as Salofalk internationally. Salofalk is the same brand name medication with a different name internationally and is not a generic alternative medication.

What is a suppository?

A suppository is an alternative way to deliver a drug. It is a small object put inside your body, often via the rectum. Once inside it then melts or dissolves in order to release the medication. This makes it easier to take medication which your stomach or intestines wouldn’t absorb well.
