Cardura XL is a prescription medication that is used to treat high blood pressure and to improve urination in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Cardura XL contains the alpha-adrenergic blocker doxazosin. Doxazosin works by relaxing your blood vessels, prostate muscles and bladder neck muscles.

• Take Cardura XL with breakfast each day.
• Swallow Cardura XL whole without chewing or crushing.
• Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Cardura XL and gradually increase it. If you miss multiple consecutive doses, speak to your doctor as you may need to restart treatment at a low dose.
• When taking Cardura XL for blood pressure, continue taking this medication even when you feel well.
• Your prostate and blood pressure may need to be checked regularly while taking this medication.

• Your medical history particularly of low blood pressure, severe constipation, liver disease, stomach blockage, or intestinal blockage.

You should also know:

• If you require cataract surgery, tell your doctor that you take this medication.
• This medication may cause dizziness or fainting. Take care when standing up after waking up.
• Cardura XL may affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can do so safely.
• Avoid standing for long periods of time or becoming dehydrated to prevent dizziness.
• Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects of this medication.

Common side effects of Cardura XL include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Low blood pressure.
• Dizziness.
• Feeling weak.
• Drowsiness or tiredness.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of doxazosin mesylate:

• New or worsening chest pain.
• Breathing problems.
• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out.
• Severe or persistent stomach pain.
• An erection that is painful or lasts for more than 4 hours.
• Bloating.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Cardura XL?

If you miss a dose of Cardura XL, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose. If you miss several days in a row, contact your doctor.
