What is Cipro?

Cipro (ciprofloxacin) is a prescription medication that is used to treat several different bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and is typically given when other forms of antibiotics can not be used. Cipro works by stopping bacteria from growing.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Cipro can be taken with or without food but should be taken at the same time each day.
  • Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication.
  • Take Cipro for the full length of time prescribed, even when your symptoms improve.
  • Do not share this medication with anyone else.

Cautions

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • About your drug and other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • Your medical history particularly of arthritis, muscle disorders, myasthenia gravis, heart problems, heart attack, bone problems, joint problems, tendon problems, diabetes, nerve problems, blood circulation problems, low blood sugar, aneurysm, liver disease, kidney disease, seizures, brain tumor, head injuries, long QT syndrome or low levels of potassium in the blood.
  • If you have a family history of long QT syndrome.
  • If you find it difficult to swallow pills.
  • If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

You should also know:

  • You should not breast-feed while taking this medication or for two days after your final dose.
  • Do not take Cipro alone with dairy products including milk or yogurt, or with calcium-fortified juice. These products are okay to use at other times.
  • This medication may affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can do so safely.
  • Cipro can make it more likely to become sunburned. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen while outside and avoid using a tanning bed.
  • Diarrhea may be a sign of a new infection. Speak to your doctor before taking any anti-diarrhea medication.

Side Effects of Cipro

Common side effects of Cipro include but are not limited to:

  • Headaches.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Stomach pain or diarrhea.
  • Abnormal liver function tests.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of ciprofloxacin:

  • Severe and constant chest, stomach, or back pain.
  • Any skin rash.
  • Watery or bloody diarrhea.
  • Fast or pounding heartbeat or a fluttering in the chest.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Sudden dizziness.
  • Little or no urination.
  • Jaundice.
  • Breathing problems or muscle weakness.
  • Signs of increased skull pressure such as severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, ringing in the ears, vision problems, or pain behind the eyes.
  • Signs of a tendon rupture including movement problems, sudden pain, tenderness, swelling, stiffness or bruising, or a snapping sound in any joint.
  • Signs of nerve damage such as numbness, tingling, or pain in the legs, feet, arms, or hands.
  • Signs of serious mood or behavior changes such as paranoia, hallucinations, confusion, nervousness, memory problems, concentration problems, or suicidal thoughts.
  • Signs of low blood sugar such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, hunger, feeling irritated, shakiness, or a fast heart rate.
  • Signs of a severe skin reaction such as a red or purple skin rash that spreads, blisters and peels, sore throat, burning eyes, or fever.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.
