Hydrocortisone (Cortef) is a prescription medication that is used to treat several different conditions including skin conditions, allergic disorders, lupus, arthritis, ulcerative colitis, lung disorders, adrenal insufficiency, blood cell disorders, certain cancers, and multiple sclerosis. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid medication that decreases your immune system’s response.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Take hydrocortisone with a full glass of water.
• Take with food or milk to prevent upset stomach.
• Follow your doctor’s dosing schedule carefully.
• Do not stop taking this medication suddenly or you may suffer from withdrawal symptoms.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, tuberculosis, liver disease, cirrhosis, stomach ulcers, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, thyroid disorder, osteoporosis, colostomy, ileostomy, depression, mental illness, cataracts, glaucoma, herpes infection of the eyes or a muscle disorder.
• If you smoke or are physically inactive.
• If you have a family history of osteoporosis.
• If you do not get sufficient vitamin D or calcium through your diet.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

You should also know:

• Do not breastfeed while taking this medication.
• Do not receive any “live” vaccinations while taking this medication.
• This mediation can weaken your immune system. Avoid people that are sick or have infections. Speak to your doctor if you are exposed to measles or chickenpox. This can be fatal in those taking steroid medications.

Common side effects of Hydrocortisone include but are not limited to:

• Increased appetite.
• Weight gain.
• Headaches or dizziness.
• Thinning skin, bruising, or discoloration.
• Increased sweating.
• Stomach bloating.
• Changes to menstrual periods.
• Sleeping problems.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of hydrocortisone:

• Severe headaches, ringing in the ears, or pain behind the eyes.
• Unusual mood or behavior changes.
• Muscle weakness or loss of muscle mass.
• Eye pain or vision changes such as blurred vision, tunnel vision, or seeing halos around lights.
• New or unusual pain in the bones, joints, or muscles.
• Seizures.
• Signs of infection such as fever, chills, breathing problems, cough, mouth or skin sores, burning urination, or diarrhea.
• Signs of fluid retention including rapid weight gain, swelling, or shortness of breath.
• Signs of increased adrenal gland hormones including thinning skin, increased body hair, menstrual changes, sexual changes, skin discoloration, or tiredness.
• Signs of decreased adrenal gland hormones, such as diarrhea, nausea, menstrual changes, skin discoloration, lightheadedness, weakness, or craving salty foods.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of hydrocortisone?

If you miss a dose of hydrocortisone, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
