What is Cyclogyl Eye Drops?

Cyclogyl Eye Drops is a prescription medication that is used to dilate the pupils before an eye exam. Cyclogyl Eye Drops contain the anticholinergic drug cyclopentolate which works by temporarily relaxing the muscles in the eyes causing them to dilate.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Cyclogyl Eye Drops should be used around 45 minutes before an eye exam or procedure.
  • This medication is typically given by a healthcare provider.
  • Once you have received this medication, keep your eyes closed for 2-3 minutes and press your finger to the tear duct to prevent liquid from draining away.

Cautions

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • About your drug and other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • Your medical history particularly of angle-closure glaucoma.
  • If you are pregnant.
  • If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

  • Children should not eat within four hours of using this medication.
  • Cyclogyl may cause blurred vision for up to 24 hours after application. Do not drive or operate machinery unless you can do so safely.
  • This medication may increase your sensitivity to light. Protect your eyes until the effects wear off.

Common side effects of Cyclogyl Eye Drops include but are not limited to:

  • Mild eye irritation or redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Puffy eyelids

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of cyclopentolate:

  • Eye pain
  • Vision changes including blurred vision, tunnel vision or seeing halos around lights
  • Severe eye burning or redness
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Drowsiness
  • Constipation or little or no urinating
  • Fever, skin rashes or flushing
  • Dry mouth or nose
  • Decreased sweating
  • In children, feeding problems, speech problems, confusion, restlessness, excitement, loss of coordination, stomach bloating or behavior changes
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat
