Demadex is a prescription medication that is used to treat high blood pressure and to treat fluid redemption for patients with kidney disease, liver disease or heart failure. Demadex is a loop diuretic (water pill) medication that contains torsemide. Torsemide works by causing you to produce more urine in order to help your body remove excess salt and water.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Take Demadex orally with or without food.
• Your doctor may want to check your blood pressure, blood and urine while you take this medication.
• If you are taking this medication for high blood pressure, continue taking Demadex regularly, even if you feel well.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of kidney problems, liver problems, heart disease or gout.
• If you are unable to urinate.
• If you are on a low-salt diet.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

• Demadex should not be taken by anyone younger than 18.
• Tell all of your caregivers that you take this medication, especially before an x-ray or CT scan that uses a dye injected into your veins.

Common side effects of Demadex include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Increased urination.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of torsemide.

• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out.
• Sudden hearing loss or ringing in your ears.
• Signs of a low magnesium level including irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps or spasms, dizziness, feeling jittery or feeling like you are choking or coughing.
• Signs of a low sodium level such as slurred speech, loss of coordination, confusion, headaches, vomiting, feeling unsteady or severe weakness.
• Signs of a low potassium level including irregular heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, feeling limp, numbness or tingling, constipation, leg cramps, muscle weakness or an increase in your thirst or urination.
• Signs of a kidney problem such as shortness of breath, tiredness, swelling in your ankles or feet or urination that is painful, difficult, little or if you do not urinate.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Demadex?

If you miss a dose of Demadex, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Demadex is available in a strength of 2.5mg, 5mg and 10mg.
