Oxybutynin is a prescription medication that is used to treat the symptoms of overactive bladder such as frequent and urgent urination, night-time urination and incontinence. Oxybutynin is an antispasmodic medication and works to reduce overactive bladder by reducing the frequency of muscle spasms in the bladder and urinary tract.

• Oxybutynin can be taken with or without food.
• Take this medication with a full glass of water.
• Swallow oxybutynin whole without chewing or crushing.

• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of liver disease, kidney disease, stomach blockage, intestinal blockage, glaucoma, enlarged prostate, ulcerative colitis, myasthenia gravis, liver disease, kidney disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Parkinson’s disease, nerve disorders, slow digestion or if you are unable to urinate.

You should also know:

• Oxybutynin can affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can do so safely.
• Oxybutynin can decrease your sweating. Drink plenty of fluids and take care not to overheat.
• Avoid alcohol as it can increase the side effects of this medication.

Common side effects of oxybutynin include but are not limited to:

• Dizziness.
• Drowsiness.
• Dry eyes or blurred vision.
• Constipation.
• Diarrhea.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of oxybutynin:

• Painful, difficult or little urination.
• Severe stomach pain or constipation.
• Eye pain.
• Vision changes including blurred vision, tunnel vision or seeing halos around lights.
• Signs of dehydration including heavy sweating, dry or hot skin, severe thirst, feeling hot or inability to urinate.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of oxybutynin?

If you miss a dose of oxybutynin, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
