Effient is a prescription medication that is used to treat blood clots in patients that have acute coronary syndrome. Effient contains prasugrel and works by preventing blood platelets from sticking together and forming blood clots. Effient may be taken alone or alongside aspirin.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Effient can be taken with or without food.
• Do not stop taking this medication without speaking to a doctor. Stopping this medication too early can cause serious or fatal problems.
• Effient is most effective when it is taken regularly. Try to take this medication at the same time each day.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, especially other blood clot medication.
• Your medical history particularly of stomach ulcers, stroke, ‘mini-stroke’, liver disease, kidney disease, or any active bleeding.
• If you are scheduled to have surgery while taking medication.
• If you weigh less than 132 pounds.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Your treatment may need to be altered.

You should also know:

• This medication can increase the risk of bleeding. Take care when using sharp objects and avoid potentially dangerous or harmful activities.
• All of your doctors and dentists should be aware that you take this medication.
• Do not breast-feed while taking this medication.
• The risk of bleeding is higher in older adults.

Common side effects of Effient include but are not limited to:

• Nosebleeds.
• Easier bruising or bleeding.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of prasugrel.

• Any bleeding that does not stop.
• Pink or brown urine.
• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out.
• Stroke symptoms including sudden severe headache, slurred speech, sudden numbness or weakness, vision problems, or balance problems.
• Signs of stomach bleeding including coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds or bloody or tarry stools.
• Signs of a serious blood clotting problem including fever, fast heart rate, breathing problems, jaundice, pale skin, stomach pain, weakness, or purple spots under your skin or on our mouth.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Effient?

If you miss a dose of Effient, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the strength of Effient?

Both Effient and the generic alternative prasugrel are available in strengths of 5mg and 10mg.
