What is Emla Cream?

Emla Cream is a prescription medication that is used as a local anesthetic before minor surgery. Emla Cream is a combination medication that contains lidocaine and prilocaine. Emla Cream works to numb skin and the surface of the genitals by blocking nerve signals in the bottom.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Emla Cream is typically applied four hours before surgery or medical procedures.
  • Use the smallest amount of Emla Cream in order to numb the skin.
  • Do not apply Emla Cream to large areas or skin that is irritated or cut.
  • Only cover the affected area if directed by your doctor.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • About your drug and other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • Your medical history particularly of liver disease, genetic enzyme deficiency or methemoglobinemia.
  • If you have a family history of methemoglobinemia.
  • If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
  • If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

  • You should take care not to injure treated skin areas while they are numb.
