Fareston is a prescription medication that is used to treat metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Fareston contains the drug toremifene and works by blocking estrogen in the body to prevent it from reaching cancer cells. Certain types of breast cancer need estrogen to grow.

• Fareston can be taken with or without food.
• Take this medication at the same time every day.
• You may need regular blood and liver function tests while taking Fareston.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.

• Your medical history particularly of bone cancer, blood clots, long QT syndrome, high levels of calcium, endometrial hyperplasia, low levels of magnesium or low levels of potassium.

You should also know:

• Fareston is usually taken in postmenopausal women. Use effective birth control if you are not post-menopause. This medication should not be taken during pregnancy. Ask your doctor about effective methods of birth control.
• Do not breast-feed while taking Fareston.
• Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit products while taking this medication.
• This medication can pass into bodily fluids. Caregivers should wear rubber gloves when cleaning up fluids, washing soiled clothing or handling contaminated trash.

Common side effects of Fareston include but are not limited to:

• Vaginal discharge.
• Nausea.
• Sweating.
• Hot flashes.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of toremifene:

• Abnormal vaginal bleeding.
• Pelvic pain.
• Slow breathing or slow heart rate.
• Fainting.
• Weak pulse.
• Eye pain.
• Vision changes including blurred vision, tunnel vision, or seeing halos around lights.
• Signs of a liver problem including dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, loss of appetite, easy bruising or bleeding, tiredness, or upper stomach pain.
• Signs of a high level of calcium including muscle weakness, confusion, bone pain, lack of energy, nausea, constipation, vomiting, increased thirst or urination, or tiredness.
• Signs of a blood clot including wheezing, slurred speech, severe headache, vision problems, balance problems, sudden numbness or weakness, chest pain, or coughing up blood.
• Signs of a life-threatening heart rhythm disorder including seizures, severe dizziness, headaches with chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats, lightheadedness, or feeling like you might pass out.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Fareston?

If you miss a dose of Fareston, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
