Metronidazole is a prescription medication that is used to treat bacterial infections. Metronidazole is an antibiotic medication and can be used to treat bacterial infections in the vagina, liver, skin joints, stomach, brain and respiratory tract.

• Swallow metronidazole whole without crushing or chewing the tablet.

You should also know:

• You should not take metronidazole during pregnancy as it can harm an unborn baby.
• This medication passes into breast milk. Do not breast-feed within 23 hours of taking this medication.

Common side effects of Metronidazole include but are not limited to:

• Unpleasant metallic taste.
• Mouth sores.
• Nausea or vomiting.
• Diarrhea.
• Stomach pain.
• Loss of appetite.
• Constipation.
• Rash or itching.
• Vaginal itching or discharge.
• A tongue that is swollen, hairy or red.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Metronidazole.

• Headaches.
• Dizziness.
• Seizures.
• Fever.
• Diarrhea.
• Feeling irritated or depressed.
• A numbness, tingling or burning pain in your hands or feet.
• Problems with coordination.
• Neck stiffness.
• Muscle weakness.
• Trouble swallowing.
• Red or swollen gums or ulcers or blisters in your mouth.
• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out.
• Pain behind your eyes.
• Vision problems, seeing flashes of light or increased sensitivity to light.
• Trouble speaking or understanding speech.
• Signs of liver failure including nausea, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice or stomach pain.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Metronidazole?

If you miss a dose of Metronidazole, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
