Flovent Diskus is an inhaled steroid medication used to prevent asthma attacks. Flovent is not a rescue inhaler, and shouldn’t be used to treat an asthma attack that has already begun.

Always follow your doctor’s instructions and use Flovent exactly as prescribed.

• Flovent Diskus comes with special inhaler that delivers doses of dry powder medication.
• Hold Flovent Diskus horizontally. Open it, then slide the level away from the mouthpiece until it clicks. The diskus is now ready to use.
• Exhale while holding the diskus horizontally and away from your mouth.
• Put the mouthpiece to your lips and inhale quickly and deeply through your mouth.
• Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly.

Long-term use of Flovent or other steroids can cause osteoporosis, especially if you smoke, don’t exercise, or don’t get enough vitamin D or calcium.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should talk to their doctor before using Flovent.

Before using Flovent, inform your doctor if you have any of the following:

• Any type of infection (including parasites)
• Compromised immune system
• Liver disease
• Glaucoma or cataracts
• Tuberculosis
• Low bone mineral density

Common side effects of Flovent include:

• White patches or sores in the mouth and throat
• Cold symptoms
• Headache
• Deep or hoarse voice

Contact your doctor if you experience these more serious side effects:

• Weakness, nausea, or vomiting
• Worsened asthma symptoms
• Liver symptoms – jaundice, upper abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools
• Vision problems
• Fever, skin rash, tingling

Can I use Flovent Diskus in the event of an asthma attack?

No. Flovent is not a rescue medication, and will not help in the event of an asthma attack.

Do I need a prescription to buy Flovent Diskus?

Yes. This medication is currently only available with a prescription.

I can’t taste any powder when I use Flovent Diskus. Is it still working?

Yes. Flovent Diskus delivers your medication in a very fine powder. You may not taste or feel it in your mouth.

Can I use a spacer with Flovent Diskus?

No. Diskus inhalers are not designed to be used with a spacer. Using a spacer will prevent you from getting the appropriate amount of medicine.
