What is Habitrol Patch?

Habitrol Patches are prescription medication patches that are used to help patients to stop smoking. Habitrol is a key ingredient in many tobacco products and helps you to quit by reducing the withdrawal symptoms suffered as you quit smoking.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Start using Habitrol Patches on the day that you quit smoking.
  • Apply the patch to a hairless area of your chest or upper arm and hold down firmly for around ten seconds.
  • Patches should be worn for 24 hours. Do not wear more than one patch at a time.
  • If you have sleeping problems or vivid dreams, remove this patch before bed.
  • If a patch falls off, stick it back into place. If it does not stay on, replace it with a new patch.
  • Habitrol Patches should be used as part of a treatment program that also includes quitting smoking, group support, and counseling.


Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • About your drug and other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • Your medical history particularly of heart disease, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, stroke, liver disease, diabetes, blood circulation problems, thyroid disorder, stomach ulcer, high blood pressure or pheochromocytoma.
  • If your skin is sensitive to bandages or adhesive tape.
  • If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

  • Habitrol Patches should not be used by anyone younger than 18.
  • These patches should not be used during pregnancy. Use effective birth control while using Habitrol.
  • Remove Habitrol Patches before undergoing an MRI exam.
  • Do not use lotions or moisturizing soaps on the areas that you wear a patch.

Side Effects of Habitrol Patch

Common side effects of Habitrol Patch include but are not limited to:

  • Mild irritation where applied.
  • Muscle or joint pain.
  • Headaches.
  • Sleep problems or strange dreams.
  • Dizziness.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Upset stomach.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Habitrol:

  • Redness, swelling, or rashes where worn.
  • Fast or pounding heartbeat.
  • Fluttering in the chest.
  • Severe nausea or vomiting.
  • Severe weakness or dizziness.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.



What should I do if I forget to apply my Habitrol Patch?

If you miss a dose of Habitrol Patch, you should apply it as soon as you remember. Do not wear a patch for over 24 hours.
