Haloperidol is a prescription medication that is used to treat schizophrenia and to control speech and motor tics in patients that have Tourette’s syndrome. Haloperidol is an antipsychotic medication and works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters within the brain.

• Haloperidol may be taken with or without food.
• Do not take more of this medication than prescribed as this may cause a serious heart rhythm disorder that may be fatal.

• It can take several weeks to feel the full benefit of haloperidol. Continue taking this medication regularly.

• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. This medication may cause problems in the newborn if taken during the final three months of pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding. It may not be safe.

• Drinking alcohol with haloperidol increases the risk of side effects.
• Haloperidol may affect your reactions and concentration. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you can do it safely.

Common side effects of haloperidol include but are not limited to:

Headaches.
• Dizziness or a spinning sensation.
• Uncontrolled muscle movements
• Breast enlargement.
• Irregular menstrual periods.
• Restlessness.
• Sleep problems or drowsiness.
• Anxiety.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of haloperidol.

• Uncontrolled facial muscle movements including lip-smacking, tongue movement, chewing, frowning, blinking, or eye movement.
• Rapid mood or behavior changes.
• Muscle spasms in your neck.
• Trouble swallowing.
• Throat tightness or shortness of breath.
• Sudden dizziness or feeling like you might pass out.
• Fast or pounding heartbeat, chest pain, or a fluttering in your chest.
• Coughing with mucus.
• Signs of a severe nervous system reaction including fast or uneven heartbeat, feeling like you might pass out, tremors, high fever, rigid muscles, confusion, or sweating.
• Signs of a low white blood cell count including skin sores, mouth sires, sore throat, breathing problems, fever, chills, or coughing.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of haloperidol?

If you miss a dose of haloperidol, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
