Verapamil is a prescription medication that is used to treat high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and to lower heart rate. Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker medication and helps blood to flow more easily around the body. Verapamil works by relaxing blood vessels in the body.

• If you only take verapamil once a day, then it should be taken in the morning.

Common side effects of verapamil include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Constipation.
• Dizziness.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of verapamil:

• Shortness of breath.
• New or worsening abnormal or slow heartbeat.
• Severe dizziness.
• Passing out.
• Rapid weight gain or swelling.
• Swelling in your arms or legs.
• Signs of a liver problem including tiredness, lack of hunger, stomach pain, upset stomach, dark urine, light colored stools, jaundice or vomiting.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of verapamil?

If you miss a dose of verapamil, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
