Keppra, also known as levetiracetam, is a medication used to treat seizures that occur due to epilepsy. Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and is characterized by unpredictable seizures as well as other health problems. Levetiracetam is an anticonvulsant drug that decreases the amount of seizures you experience.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Take the liquid and regular-release tablets by mouth, typically twice a day with or without food.
• To reduce risk of side effects, you may start on a low dose of this drug and your doctor will gradually increase dose.
• Do not chew or crush the extended-release tablets. Do not split tablets unless they have a score line. Swallow the tablet whole.
• Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit.
• Do not increase dose or stop taking this drug without consulting your doctor.
• Tell your doctor if your seizures get worse or change in duration.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• If you have a medical history of mood disorders (depression) or kidney disease (like dialysis treatment)

You should also know:

• Alcohol and marijuana may increase risks of dizziness side effects. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can do it safely.
• Children are more sensitive to the side effects of mood changes and increased blood pressure while using this drug.
• Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of dizziness, loss of coordination, and drowsiness.

Common side effects of Isentress include but are not limited to:

• Unusual tiredness
• Weakness
• Dizziness
• These side effects occur more frequently during the first few weeks of treatment.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of levetiracetam .

• Mood changes (irritability, aggression, agitation, anger)
• Signs of infections (sore throat, fever etc.)
• Signs of anemia (unusual tiredness, pale skin)
• Trouble breathing
• Severe dizziness

Can pregnant women take this drug?

This medication may harm an unborn baby, but many women may need to take Keppra since untreated seizures are a serious condition. Do not stop taking this drug if you care pregnant, unless directed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy. This medication passes into breast milk.
