What is Lialda?

Lialda and the generic alternative mesalamine are medications used to treat ulcerative colitis and its symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach pain and rectal bleeding. Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory medication and works by preventing the body from producing substances which causes inflammation. Lialda can also be used to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Lialda:

• Worsening symptoms of ulcerative colitis including fever, bloody diarrhea, cramping or increased abdominal pain.
• Dark urine.
• Signs of kidney problems such as a change in your amount of urine.
• Chest pain, severe stomach pain or severe abdominal pain.
• Shortness of breath.
• Jaundice.
• Persistent nausea or vomiting.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or a swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Lialda?

If you miss a dose of Lialda, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What else is Lialda called?

Lialda is also known as Mezavant internationally. Mezavant is the same brand name medication with a different name internationally and is not a generic alternative medication. Generic Lialda is called mesalamine delayed release.
