What is Lopid?

Lopid, also known as gemfibrozil, is a medication used in combination with a healthy diet to lower unhealthy fats and raise “good” cholesterol. Gemfibrozil is a “fibrate” which works by decreasing the amount of fat produced by the liver. Lowering fats (triglycerides) in people with high cholesterol levels may decrease your risk of pancreas disease and lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. Exercising, drinking less alcohol, and not smoking also helps lower your risk of these conditions.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Take this medication by mouth, typically 30 minutes before your morning and evening meals.
  • If you are taking other cholesterol-lowering drugs, take gemfibrozil at least one hour before or 4-6 hours after taking other medication.
  • Take this drug regularly to get the most benefit from it. Take it at the same time each day.
  • Continue taking this drug even if you feel well.
  • It may take up to 3 months before you get the full benefit of this drug.

Cautions

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • About your drug and other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • If you have a medical history of liver disease, gallbladder disease, kidney disease, or alcohol use.

You should also know:

  • This drug is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It is unknown if it passes into breastmilk.

Side effects of Lopid

Common side effects of Lopid include but are not limited to:

  • Stomach upset
  • Stomach pain

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of gemfibrozil.

  • Gallstones
