Malarone is a prescription medication that is used to treat and prevent malaria. Malarone is a combination medication that contains atovaquone and proguanil. Malarone works by interfering with parasites growing in the red blood cells of humans.

• Take Malarone with food or a milky drink.
• Take Malarone at the same time every day. If you vomit within an hour of taking Malarone, take a second dose. Speak to your doctor if vomiting continues.

• When taking Malarone to prevent malaria, start taking it one or two days before arriving in an area with malaria. Take the medication every day and for seven days after leaving the area.

• Use protective clothing, insect repellents and mosquito nets alongside this medication.

• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

• No medication including Malarone is 100% effective for preventing malaria. Use other precautions including protective clothing, insect repellents, and mosquito nets.

Common side effects of Malarone include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Dizziness.
• Mild diarrhea or upset stomach.
• Mild stomach pain.
• Mild itching.
• Weakness.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Malarone:

• Severe skin rash.
• Fever.
• Mouth sores.
• Severe or uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhea.
• Speech problems.
• Problems with balance or walking.
• Easy bruising, red or purple spots under the skin or unusual bleeding, such as from the nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum.
• Dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, loss of appetite, nausea, or stomach pain.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Malarone?

If you miss a dose of Malarone, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
