Maxitrol Eye Drops treat conditions involving swelling of the eyes and treat or prevent bacterial eye infections. This product contains neomycin and polymyxin, antibiotics that work by stopping the growth of bacteria. It also contains dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that works by reducing swelling. Maxitrol Eye Drops prevent only bacterial eye infections. It will not work for other eye infections and may worsen them. 

Use Maxitrol Eye Drops as directed. Please do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor. To use the Maxitrol Eye Drops, follow these instructions:

• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
• Check the dropper tip to ensure it is not chipped or cracked.
• Avoid touching the dropper tip against your eye or anything else; eyedrops and droppers must be kept clean.
• While tilting your head back, pull down the lower lid of your eye with your index finger to form a pocket.
• Hold the dropper (tip down) with the other hand as close to the eye as possible without touching it.
• Brace the remaining fingers of that hand against your face.
• While looking up, gently squeeze the dropper so that a single drop falls into the pocket made by the lower eyelid. Remove your index finger from the lower eyelid.
• Close your eye for 2 to 3 minutes and tip your head down as though looking at the floor. Try not to blink or squeeze your eyelids.
• Place a finger on the tear duct and apply gentle pressure.
• Wipe any excess liquid from your face with a tissue.
• If you are to use more than one drop in the same eye, wait at least 5 minutes before instilling the next drop.
• Replace and tighten the cap on the dropper bottle. Do not wipe or rinse the dropper tip.
• Wash your hands to remove any medication.

Before taking Maxitrol Eye Drops, tell your doctor:

• If you are allergic to dexamethasone, neomycin, or polymyxin B or have a fungal or viral infection in your eyes,
• Medical conditions
• glaucoma;
• Cataracts, or if you need cataract surgery; or
• An allergic reaction to a medicine like neomycin.

Common side effects are stinging/burning the eyes for 1 to 2 minutes may occur when Maxitrol Eye Drops are applied. 

Use of Maxitrol Eye Drops for prolonged/repeated periods may result in a new fungal eye infection. It may increase your risk for other eye problems. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: new or worsening eye symptoms (such as discharge, swelling, redness), vision problems, or eye pain. Do not use this medication for longer than prescribed.

How do Maxitrol Eye Drops work?

Maxitrol Eye Drops contain three ingredients that work together to treat or prevent bacterial infections. Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, lowers eye inflammation and relieves eye pain. Neomycin, an antibiotic, prevents bacteria from making the nutrients they need to survive. Polymyxin B, another antibiotic, makes the bacteria's protective covering weaker.

Is it safe to drive while on Maxitrol Eye Drops?

Maxitrol Eye Drops may cause blurred vision and may impair your reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you.
