Onglyza is a prescription drug that helps control blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It may be taken along with other diabetes medicines, but is not recommended for use with insulin. Onglyza does not treat Type 1 diabetes.

Always follow your doctor’s instructions and use Onglyza exactly as prescribed.

• Take with or without food.
• Swallow whole. Do not crush, break or chew tablet.
• Monitor your blood sugar carefully, and carry sources of sugar such (glucose tablets, hard candy, fruit juice) that can be used in case of low blood sugar.

Do not take Onglyza if you have diabetic ketoacidosis.

Before taking Onglyza, inform your doctor if you have any of the following:

• Heart or kidney disease
• Pancreatitis
• High triglycerides
• Gallstones
• Alcoholism

Common side effects of Onglyza include:

• Cold symptoms – stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing, cough
• Headache

Contact your doctor if you experience these more serious side effects:

• Severe joint pain
• Pain or burning during urination
• Heart problems – weakness or fatigue, rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, swelling in feet, legs and midsection

Can I take Onglyza if I have Type 1 diabetes?

No. Onglyza is specifically for patients with Type 2 diabetes, and should only be taken under the care of a doctor.

How long will I need to take Onglyza?

Continue taking Onglyza as directed by your doctor. Lifestyle changes including diet and exercise can help better control your diabetes, and may reduce the need to take Onglyza.
