Pennsaid, also known as diclofenac, is a topical solution used to treat pain in the knees caused by osteoarthritis. This drug is only meant for the knee and should not be used on other parts of the body. Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Wash your hands before applying Pennsaid and wait for at least 30 minutes before bathing or showering.
• Spread the solution over the front, back, and sides of the knee. Wait until it is dry before putting on clothes.
• Wait until the area is dry before applying cosmetics, sunscreen, lotions, or other medication skin products on the same area you treat with Pennsaid.
• Do not apply this medication to an open wound or area of infection, rash, or burn.
• Do not cover treated skin with bandage or heating pad.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• If you have a medical history of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stomach ulcers, asthma, liver or kidney disease, or fluid retention.
• If you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

You should also know:

• This drug may increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke as well as intestinal bleeding.
• Pennsaid should not be used for anyone younger than 18 years old.
• It is not known if this drug passes into breast milk.
• Diclofenac can affect ovulation and it can be harder to get pregnant while taking this drug.
• Using Pennsaid in the last three months of pregnancy may harm the unborn baby.

Common side effects of Pennsaid include but are not limited to:

• Burning, itching, or redness of the skin
• Swelling
• Soreness at the application site

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of diclofenac.

• Diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Shivering or chills
• Trouble sleeping
• Vomiting
• Blood in urine
• Trouble breathing
• Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight

Pennsaid is available in generic and brand name 60 ml and 120 ml dosages.

What should I avoid while using Pennsaid?

It is important to avoid exposed treated skin to heat and sunlight. Avoiding alcohol to prevent the risk of stomach bleeding is also recommended. Ask your doctor before taking any cold or allergy medication.
