What is Plaquenil?

Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) is a medication prescribed to prevent and to treat acute attack of malaria. Malaria is a disease caused by parasites entering your body through a mosquito bite and is typically found in areas of South America, Southern Asia and Africa. Plaquenil is not effective against all strains of Malaria. Hydroxychloroquine may also be prescribed to treat discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Plaquenil is taken by mouth and may be taken with a meal or glass of milk in order to decrease nausea.
  • When used to prevent malaria, two doses of Plaquenil are typically taken once a week, on the same day each week. The first dose is usually taken one to two weeks before travelling to an area where malaria is common and is then continued for eight weeks after travel.
  • When use to treat acute attacks of malaria, a typical dose is four tablets immediately followed by another two tablets 6-8 hours later and then a further two tablets for each of the next two days.
  • When treating lupus erythematosus, a typical dose is one or two tablets taken once or twice a day.
  • When treating rheumatoid arthritis, a typical dose is one to three tablets taken daily.
  • Always take Plaquenil exactly as directed by your doctor.
  • When taking Plaquenil for malaria, continue taking it for the full amount of time, even if your symptoms improve.
  • When treating lupus or arthritis, tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after six months.

Cautions

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • About your drug and other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the counter medications.
  • Your medical history particularly of diabetes, heart disease, heart rhythm disorder, QT syndrome, stomach disorder, history of vision changes, liver disease, kidney disease, psoriasis, porphyria or G6PD deficiency.
  • A history of alcoholism.
  • If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breast feeding.

You should also know:

  • Plaquenil should not be approved to be used by anyone younger than 18.

Signs of Plaquenil

Common side effects of Plaquenil include but are not limited to:

  • Nausea, vomiting or stomach pain.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.
  • Weight loss or loss of appetite.
  • Ringing in your ears.
  • Hair loss.
  • Skin rash or itching.
  • Mood changes.
  • Feeling nervous or irritable.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Plaquenil:

  • Numbness or tingling or muscle weakness.
  • Weak pulse or slow heart rate.
  • Headache with chest pain, fainting, severe dizziness or fast or pounding heartbeats.
  • Symptoms of low blood cell counts such as lightheadedness, fever, chills, sore throat, weakness or ill feeling, swollen gums, skin sores, mouth sores, rapid heart rate, easy bruising, unusual bleeding or pale skin.
  • Symptoms of low blood sugar including feeling anxious or shaky, headaches, hunger, sweating, dizziness, irritability, nausea or fast heart rate.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or a swelling in your face, lips or throat.
