Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is used to treat erosive esophagus. Protonix contains pantoprazole and works by decreasing the amount of acid that is produced by your stomach. Pantoprazole is typically given for eight weeks at a time while your esophagus heals and can help to relieve symptoms including heartburn, persistent cough and difficulty swallowing.

Common side effects of Protonix include but are not limited to:

• Headaches or dizziness.
• Stomach pain, nausea or vomiting.
• Gas or diarrhea.
• Cold symptoms, especially in children.
• Joint pain.
• Fever or rash.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Protonix:

• Severe stomach pain or diarrhea which is bloody or watery.
• Urinating less than usual or blood in your urine.
• Sudden pain or trouble moving your wrist, back or hip.
• Swelling or rapid weight gain.
• Symptoms of low magnesium including dizziness, fast or irregular heartbeat, coughing, a choking feeling, tremors, feeling jittery, jerking muscle movements, muscle cramps or muscle spasms in your hands and feet.
• New or worse lupus symptoms including joint pain or a skin rash on your arms and cheeks that gets worse in sunlight.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Protonix?

If you miss a dose of Protonix, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What else is Protonix called?

Protonix is also known as Pantpas internationally. Pantpas is the same brand name medication with a different name internationally and is not a generic alternative medication. Generic Protonix is called pantoprazole.
