• Apply a thin layer of Protopic Ointment to the affected skin area.

• Do not cover the affected area with a bandage.
• Avoid swimming, showering, or bathing immediately after applying this medication.

• This medication can affect your sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid sunlight, sunlamps, and tanning beds and wear protective clothing while outdoors. Do not apply sunscreen to the affected areas.
• Protopic Ointment can weaken your immune system. Avoid people with infections such as chickenpox.
• This medication passes into breast milk and can harm a nursing infant.

Common side effects of Protopic Ointment include but are not limited to:

• Flu symptoms including sneezing, stuffy nose, or sore throat.
• Headaches.
• Acne.
• Increased sensitivity to temperatures.
• Skin redness.
• Mild stinging, itching, or burning where applied.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of tacrolimus:

• Severe stinging, burning, soreness, or itching where applied.
• Crusting or redness around hair follicles.
• Swollen glands.
• Signs of skin infection including itching, swelling, redness, or oozing.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Protopic Ointment?

If you miss a dose of Protopic Ointment, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Protopic Ointment is available in a strength of 0.03%. Generic Protopic Ointment is known as tacrolimus ointment and is available in a strength of 0.1%.
