What is Pulmicort?

Pulmicort Turbuhaler is an inhalation device used to control asthma and prevent symptoms including shortness of breath and wheezing. Pulmicort contains the corticosteroid budesonide which makes breathing easier by reducing swelling and irritation in your airwaves.
Pulmicort Turbuhaler is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Inhaler Pulmicort by mouth. It is typically prescribed to be used once or twice a day.
  • Inhale deeply and forcefully while using the device and then breathe out away from the device.
  • Do not shake Pulmicort Turbuhaler. You do not need to use a spacer device with it.
  • If your doctor has prescribed you to take two doses or if you have more than one inhaler, wait at least a minute between inhalations.
  • Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after using this inhaler to prevent dry mouth, hoarseness and oral yeast infections.
  • You may notice a benefit within 24 hours of using Pulmicort. It may take up to two weeks to feel the full benefit of this medication.
  • Tell your doctor if your condition worsens.

Cautions

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • About your drug and other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • Your medical history particularly of eye disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, thyroid problems, diabetes, stomach problems, intestinal problems, osteoporosis, current or past infections, bleeding problems or mental or mood conditions.
  • If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breast feeding.

You should also know:

  • Before any surgery or emergency treatment, tell your doctor that you use a corticosteroid or that you have used a corticosteroid in the last twelve months. Carry a warning card or medical ID bracelet that says you take this medication.
  • Pulmicort may mask signs of infection and make you more likely to catch infections. Avoid people with contagious infections and wash your hands thoroughly while taking this medication.
  • Do not have any vaccinations while using Pulmicort unless advised by your doctor. Avoid contact with people who have recently had live vaccines.

Side Effects of Pulmicort

Common side effects of Pulmicort include but are not limited to:

  • Dry or irritated throat or hoarseness.
  • Voice changes.
  • Bad taste in the mouth.
  • Nausea.
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Runny or stuffy nose.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Pulmicort:

  • Sudden severe worsening of breathing problems after using.
  • Signs of infection such as ear pain, sore throat, chills or fever.
  • White patches in your mouth or on your tongue. This may be a sign of oral thrush.
  • Unusual tiredness.
  • Easy bruising or bleeding.
  • Unusual hair growth.
  • Puffy face.
  • Mental or mood changes such as depression, agitation or mood swings.
  • Thinning skin.
  • Slow wound healing.
  • Muscle weakness or pain.
  • Increased thirst or urination.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

If you miss a dose of Pulmicort, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

The generic alternative to a Pulmicort Turbuhaler is budesonide turbuhaler. Budesonide turbuhaler is available in 100mcg and 200mcg strengths. Only the brand name Pulmicort is available in 400mcg.
