Silenor is a prescription medication that is used to treat insomnia. Silenor contains the tricyclic antidepressant drug doxepin and works to help you stay asleep for longer. This medication works by slowing activity in the brain which allows sleep.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Silenor should be taken within 30 minutes of bedtime.
• Do not take this medication within 3 hours of eating.
• Continue taking this medication regularly. It can take seven to ten days before your symptoms improve.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, particularly of MAO inhibitors
• Your medical history, particularly sleep apnea, kidney disease, liver disease, glaucoma, trouble urinating, depression, mental illness, or diabetes
• A history of drug or alcohol addiction
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy

You should also know:

• Silenor should not be taken by anyone younger than 18.
• Do not breast-feed while taking this medication.
• If you have no memory of certain activities, speak to your doctor immediately.
• Do not take Silenor within 14 days of taking an MAO inhibitor.

Common side effects of Silenor include but are not limited to:

• Cold symptoms including sore throat, sneezing or stuffy nose
• Nausea
• Drowsiness or tiredness

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of doxepin:

• No memory of recent activities
• Unusual thoughts or behavior
• Depression or thoughts about self-harm
• Seizures
• Hallucinations
• Confusion
• Uncontrolled muscle movements
• Chest pain
• Eye redness or pain
• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out
• Mouth blisters or ulcers, red or swollen gums, or swallowing problems
• Signs of infection including flu symptoms, diarrhea, skin sores, white patches, breathing problems, painful or burning urination, skin swelling, or skin redness
• Signs of low red blood cells including shortness of breath, lightheadedness, cold hands or feet, pale skin, or unusual tiredness
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Silenor?

If you miss a dose of Silenor, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose. Do not take this medication if you do not have time for a full night’s sleep.
