Spiriva is an inhaled drug used to prevent bronchospasm in patients with COPD. The active ingredient, tiotropium, is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and allows you to breathe easier. Spiriva is a maintenance drug that helps prevent COPD symptoms, and should not be used in the event of an attack.
Spiriva is typically used once daily to improve COPD symptoms and prevent flare-ups. This dry powder medication comes in capsule form, and must be inserted into the HandiHaler to use. Spiriva should only be inhaled through the mouth. Always follow your doctor’s directions and all instructions included with Spiriva.

How long does Spiriva take to work?
Spiriva starts working in your airways from the first dose, but it may take up to two weeks for you to notice significant improvement. Continue using Spiriva unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
Is it safe to take Spiriva and smoke?
Yes. Although quitting smoking will help improve your COPD symptoms, you don’t have to quit in order to use this drug.
Can I stop taking Spiriva if I feel better?
