What is Tasmar?

Tasmar is a prescription medication that is used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Tasmar contains tolcapone and is typically taken with other medications. Tasmar works by blocking the natural COMT enzyme allowing other Parkinson’s medications such as levodopa to last in your system for longer.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Tasmar is prescribed alongside other Parkinson’s disease medication.
  • Tolcapone is typically taken three times a day.
  • Your doctor may start you on a low dose of this medication and increase the dosage after 3 weeks if needed.
  • Try to take this medication at the same time each day.
  • Do not stop taking this medication without speaking to your doctor. Stopping Tasmar suddenly can cause the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease to worsen.
  • Tell your doctor if your symptoms persist or worsen.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • About your drug and other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.

  • If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
  • If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

  • Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Tasmar.
