What is Vaniqa Cream?

Vaniqa Cream (eflornithine) is a prescription cream used to reduce unwanted hair growth on the face and under the chin in women. Eflornithine books a natural enzyme that is needed for hair growth which slows hair growth and can also make the hair lighter and finer. Vaniqa Cream does not remove hair or cause hair to fall out.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Apply a thin layer of medication to the affected areas of the face and chin and rub it in thoroughly. It is typically applied twice a day, at least eight hour apart.
• Wait at least five minutes after hair removal before using this medication.
• Do not wash the treated area for at least four hours after using Vaniqa.
• Wash your hands immediately after using Vaniqa Cream. Avoid getting this medication in your eyes, nose or mouth. If the medication does get into these areas, rinse immediately with clean water.
• Wait until the affected area is completely dry before applying cosmetics, sunscreen or moisturizers over the treated area.
• Continue using hair removal techniques such as shaving and plucking while using this medication.
• You should notice an improvement in four to eight weeks. Continue to use this medication as directed.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of cuts, infections and sores on your face.
• If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breast-feeding.

You should also know:

• Hair growth may return to pretreatment levels after approximately eight weeks after you stop using Vaniqa Cream.
• Vaniqa is not approved to be used by anyone younger than 12.

Common side effects of Vaniqa Cream include but are not limited to:

• Burning, tingling stinging and redness of the skin.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Vaniqa Cream:

• Acne or “hair bumps”.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

How long does it take Vaniqa Cream to work?

You should notice an improvement in four to eight weeks. Continue to use this medication as directed.
