Videx EC is a prescription medication that is used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Videx EC contains the antiviral drug didanosine and prevents HIV from multiplying in the body. Videx EC is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Videx EC should be taken on an empty stomach. Take this medication either 30 minutes before or two hours after a meal. Do not take this medication with food.
• Swallow Videx EC whole without chewing or crushing.
• You may need regular medical and vision checks while taking this medication.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of liver disease, pancreatitis, kidney disease or any cause of numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.
• If you drink large quantities of alcohol.
• If you are on dialysis.
• If you are pregnant. HIV can be passed to a baby if HIV is not controlled properly during pregnancy.

You should also know:

• Women with HIV should not breast-feed.
• Do not use any antacid that has not been directed by your doctor.
• Videx EC does not prevent HIV from spreading to others. Avoid unprotected sex or sharing razors, toothbrushes, or needles.

Common side effects of Videx EC include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Any rash.
• Nausea or vomiting.
• Stomach pain or diarrhea.
• Changes to the shape or location of body fat.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of didanosine:

• Coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds or bloody or tarry stools.
• Numbness, tingling, or pain in the hands or feet.
• Speaking or swallowing problems.
• Vision changes.
• Balance or eye movement problems.
• Menstrual changes.
• Impotence.
• Swelling in the neck or throat.
• Weakness or prickly feeling.
• Signs of a new infection such as diarrhea, weight loss, night sweats, swollen glands, fever, cold sores, coughing, or wheezing.
• Signs of a liver or pancreas problem including nausea, vomiting, fast heart rate, jaundice, dark urine, loss of appetite, or upper stomach pain.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Videx EC?

If you miss a dose of Videx EC, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Videx EC is available in strengths of 125mg, 200mg, 250mg and 400mg.
