Viibryd is a prescription medication that is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). Viibryd is an antidepressant drug that contains the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) vilazodone. Viibryd works by restoring the balance of substances in the brain.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Viibryd is most effective when taken with food.
• Continue to take Viibryd regularly. It may take several weeks or months for this medication to take effect.
• Do not stop taking this medication suddenly as this could cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
• Do not use Viibryd if you have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of seizures, epilepsy, liver disease, kidney disease, bleeding disorders, blood clotting disorders, bipolar disorder, narrow-angle glaucoma or low sodium in the blood.
• If you have a history of suicidal thoughts.
• If you have a history of drug abuse.
• If you drink alcohol.
• If you are pregnant or become pregnant. This medication may cause complications during the final trimester of pregnancy. Do not start or stop taking this medication without speaking to your doctor.
• If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

• This medication should not be used by anyone younger than 18.
• Young people may have suicidal thoughts when first taking an antidepressant. Stay alert to mood and behavior changes.
• Avoid drinking alcohol as this can increase the risk of side effects.
• Viibryd may affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can do it safely.

Common side effects of Viibryd include but are not limited to:

• Mind nausea or vomiting.
• Diarrhea.
• Sleep problems.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of vilazodone:

• New or worsening mood or behavior changes including suicidal thoughts, thoughts about hurting yourself, panic attacks, depression, hallucinations, hyperactivity, restlessness, impulsiveness, irritation, hostility, agitation, or aggressiveness.
• Seizures.
• Fast heart rate.
• Unusual bleeding or bruising such as bloody urine or bloody stools.
• Extreme happiness or sadness, risk-taking behavior, decreased inhibitions, or racing thoughts.
• Eye pain or swelling.
• Vision changes including blurred vision, tunnel vision, or seeing halos around lights.
• Red or purple pinpoint spots.
• Headaches.
• Slurred speech.
• Confusion.
• Loss of coordination or feeling unsteady.
• Severe weakness.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Viibryd?

If you miss a dose of Viibryd, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
