Ziagen is a prescription medication that is used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Ziagen contains the antiviral drug abacavir. Abacavir works by stopping HIV from multiplying. Ziagen is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.

• Ziagen can be taken with or without food.
• You may need regular medical tests while taking this medication.
• Ziagen is most effective when taken regularly. Try to take this medication at the same time each day and do not skip doses.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or the gene variation HLA-B*5701.
• If you smoke.
• If you have ever used any other HIV medications.
• If you are pregnant.

You should also know:

• Women with HIV or AIDS should not breast-feed.
• Alcohol can increase the risk of liver damage and should be avoided.
• Do not share razors, toothbrushes, needles or have unprotected sex.

Common side effects of Ziagen include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Nausea or vomiting.
• Tiredness.
• Fever, chills, or feeling ill.
• Sleeping problems including strange dreams.
• Any rash.
• Sore throat, ear pain, stuffy nose, or sneezing in children.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of abacavir:

• Balance problems.
• Swelling around the midsection.
• Severe upper stomach pain or loss of appetite.
• Unusual tiredness.
• Dark urine or clay-colored stools.
• Speaking or swallowing problems.
• Impotence.
• Jaundice.
• Chest pain or pressure that spreads to the jaw or shoulder.
• Menstrual changes.
• Swelling in the neck or throat.
• Eye movement problems.
• Weakness or a prickly feeling.
• Signs of a new infection including fever, diarrhea, weight loss, swollen glands, cough, wheezing, cold sores, or night sweats.
• Signs of lactic acidosis including irregular heartbeat, dizziness, unusual muscle pain, stomach pain, vomiting, breathing problems, feeling cold, or feeling weak or tired.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Ziagen?

If you miss a dose of Ziagen, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose. Refill your prescription before it runs out. Speak to your doctor if you miss several doses.

What is the strength of Ziagen?

Ziagen and the generic alternative abacavir are both available in the strength of 300mg.
