What is Zofran?

Zofran is a prescription medication that is used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiation treatment, or surgery. Zofran contains the drug ondansetron and works by blocking the actions of certain natural chemicals in the body.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Zofran can be taken with or without food.
  • Zofran should be taken with a full glass of water.
  • This medication is typically first taken before surgery or other treatment.

  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • Your medical history particularly of liver disease, heart failure, stomach blockage, intestinal blockage, slow heartbeats, long QT syndrome or an electrolyte imbalance.

  • Zofran is not suitable for anyone younger than four.
  • Zofran may affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machinery until it can be done safely.

Side Effects of Zofran

Common side effects of Zofran include but are not limited to:

  • Headaches.
  • Tiredness or drowsiness.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Constipation.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of ondansetron:

  • Fast or pounding heartbeats.
  • Stomach pain, severe constipation or bloating.
  • Headaches with chest pain, fainting, severe dizziness or a fast or pounding heartbeat.
  • Vision changes including blurred vision or temporary vision loss.
  • Jaundice.
  • Signs of a high level of serotonin including fast heart rate, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hallucinations, fainting, loss of coordination, agitation, fever or overactive reflexes.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Zofran?

If you miss a dose of Zofran, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the strength of Zofran?

Both Zofran and the generic alternative ondansetron are available in strengths of 4mg and 8mg.
