Linezolid is a prescription medication that is used to treat several bacterial infections including skin infections, pneumonia, and infections that are resistant to other antibiotics. Linezolid is an oxazolidinone antibiotic and MAO inhibitor that works by fighting bacteria within the body.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Linezolid can be taken with or without food.
• Take linezolid for the full amount of time prescribed, even if your symptoms improve before then.
• You may need regular vision, blood pressure and other medical checks while taking linezolid.
• Do not take this medication within 14 days of taking an MAO inhibitor.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of seizures, diabetes, high blood pressure, a carcinoid tumor, thyroid disorder, kidney disease, liver disease, bone marrow suppression, weak immune system, adrenal gland tumor or if you use a catheter.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

• Do not start or stop taking any medications without speaking to your doctor.
• Do not take anti-diarrhea medications without speaking to a doctor.
• Avoid foods and drinks high in tyramine including soy sauce, red wine, tap beer, and aged cheeses.

Common side effects of linezolid include but are not limited to:

• Headache.
• Dizziness.
• Mild skin rash.
• Nausea or vomiting.
• Diarrhea.
• Anemia.

  Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of linezolid:

• Seizures.
• Watery or bloody diarrhea. Do not use anti-diarrhea medication if this occurs.
• Severe stomach pain.
• Feeling anxious or shaky and sweating.
• Vision changes such as changes to color vision.
• Signs of lactic acidosis including irregular heart rate, dizziness, breathing problems, muscle pain, vomiting, stomach pain, feeling cold, weak, or tired.
• Signs of a low blood cell count including shortness of breath, fever, chills, mouth or skin sores, confusion, pale skin, cold hands and feet, weakness, tiredness, or feeling lightheaded.
• Signs of a high level of serotonin in the body such as fever, sweating, shivering, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle stiffness, agitation, hallucinations, fast heart rate, twitching, or loss of coordination.
• Signs of a severe skin reaction including fever, burning eyes, sore throat, skin pain, or a red or purple rash that peels and blisters.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Linezolid?

If you miss a dose of Linezolid, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
